How to Convert WAV to MIDI in 3 Steps
- 01
Step 1 — Upload your WAV
Drag and drop a .wav file, or browse your folders. Bounced a stem straight from your DAW? Export it as WAV and drop it in.
- 02
Step 2 — Let the AI transcribe
The engine reads the uncompressed waveform and maps every pitch, onset, and note length. Clean single-instrument takes usually finish in seconds.
- 03
Step 3 — Preview & download
Play the piano-roll preview against your original. If a note slipped, you'll hear it here — then download the standard .mid file.
Why Convert From WAV Instead of MP3?
Every converter claims accuracy. Here's what this one actually does — on real WAV recordings, not lab samples.
Lossless input, more accurate notes
MP3 compression throws away audio detail to shrink files — exactly the detail pitch detection depends on. WAV keeps the full waveform, so quiet harmonics and subtle timing survive.
Straight from your DAW export
Finished a take in Ableton, Logic, or FL Studio? Bounce the stem as WAV and convert WAV to MIDI directly — no format juggling, no re-recording, no quality lost in between.
Piano-roll preview before you download
See and hear every detected note on a piano roll before committing. Scrub through the transcription, compare it with your original WAV, and only download when it sounds right.
Standard MIDI that opens anywhere
The output is a plain .mid file — no proprietary format, no lock-in. Drop it onto a MIDI track in any major DAW and assign any virtual instrument.
Free to try — no install, no sign-up
Your first conversion is free and needs no account. Everything runs in your browser: upload the WAV, convert, preview the piano roll, download the MIDI — nothing to install. Sign in for unlimited conversions.

WAV to MIDI: Frequently Asked Questions
Questions musicians actually ask before converting — answered straight, no marketing fluff.
Is this WAV to MIDI converter free?
Your first conversion is free — no sign-up needed. Sign in for unlimited conversions.
How accurate is the MIDI conversion?
For clean, single-instrument WAV recordings, pitch and timing detection is very accurate — most notes land exactly where played. Dense mixes lower accuracy, so expect light cleanup. Uncompressed WAV is the biggest accuracy lever you control.
What audio formats can I convert to MIDI?
This page is built for WAV — the lossless format that gives the most accurate results. If your file is compressed, use our MP3 to MIDI converter instead — the same engine, tuned for compressed input.
Does converting from WAV give better results than MP3?
Yes — noticeably, for delicate material. MP3 compression discards the quiet harmonics and transient details that pitch detection depends on. If you can export the audio as WAV, do it; if MP3 is all you have, use our MP3 to MIDI page instead.
Can I edit the MIDI file after converting?
Absolutely — that's the whole point. The downloaded MIDI opens in our free online MIDI editor: fix slipped notes, quantize timing, transpose the key, then send it to your DAW.
Does my WAV file get uploaded to a server?
Yes — transcription runs in the cloud, so your file is uploaded for processing. It's used only to generate your MIDI and deleted automatically afterward.
What is the maximum file size and length?
The free tier accepts WAV files up to 100MB or 5 minutes. Because WAV is uncompressed, five minutes of stereo audio is roughly 50MB — so for longer recordings, bounce a shorter section or split stems and convert each one.
How do I open the converted MIDI in my DAW?
Download the .mid file and drag it onto a MIDI track in any major DAW — Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, Cubase all read standard MIDI. Assign a virtual instrument and it plays your transcribed performance.
Do I need to install anything?
No — the WAV to MIDI converter runs entirely in your browser. Upload, convert, preview, and download without installing software, and your first conversion needs no sign-up.
Can I try it with a sample file first?
Yes — click any of the four examples above and the recording loads straight into the converter. They are real recordings: a Bach cello prelude, a Vivaldi trumpet larghetto, a Ferling oboe study, and a Dvořák string quartet theme — no upload needed. Each card shows the real format and the measured length — the file that loads is exactly what the card describes.
Why are two of the examples marked as excerpts?
Uncompressed WAV is heavy — 44.1kHz 16-bit stereo runs about 10MB per minute. The Bach and Vivaldi recordings are trimmed to their opening minute so the demo files stay small. Only the length was cut; the notes are untouched, with no fades or processing.
How do I get the best transcription quality?
Export the cleanest take you have. A solo stem bounced straight from your DAW beats a full mix, and WAV keeps the quiet harmonics that MP3 compression throws away. Convert the clearest phrase first — most musicians only need 30 seconds anyway. If the take is a full mix rather than a solo stem, expect a rougher draft — a clean stem always wins.
Can I convert a WAV voice memo or humming?
Yes. A WAV voice memo or hummed melody converts the same way as any WAV recording — upload it and the engine maps the vocal line to MIDI notes. Monophonic sources like a sung melody convert cleaner than polyphonic ones, and WAV's uncompressed detail helps the pitch detection lock on.
Does converting WAV to MIDI preserve the original sound?
No — and that is the point. MIDI stores note data (pitch, timing, velocity), not audio. You lose the original tone but gain full editability: assign any virtual instrument to the transcribed notes, fix timing, or print sheet music from the performance.
Can I convert the same WAV twice with different settings?
Yes — nothing stops you from running the same file through the converter more than once. Bounce a solo stem and a full mix separately, convert each, and keep the cleaner take. Each conversion counts as a separate task against your free quota.
